Spurs sacked manager Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday after just four months in charge following an inconsistent start to the new season.
The club are understood to have reignited their interest in Conte, having approached him in the summer after he left Serie A champions Inter Milan.
However, if they are unable to convince the former Chelsea manager to take charge, then Football Insider reports that head of academy coaching Mason will become interim boss once again.

The former Spurs midfielder, who retired aged 26 after fracturing his skull in a match, was appointed in April following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.
He took charge of the final seven matches of last season, winning four and losing three matches, including the Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City.
Ultimately, he was able to guide Spurs to European qualification as they held off rivals Arsenal to finish seventh and earn a spot in the Europa Conference League.
If appointed interim boss, his first match back in charge would be the home match against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday, a side that beat Spurs a fortnight ago in the Netherlands.
That result is said to have been a contributing factor to Nuno losing his job, along with heavy league defeats to Chelsea, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Manchester United.
Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to United proved to be the final straw for the former Wolves boss, who was dismissed on Monday morning after 17 matches in charge.
He leaves the club with a 53% win rate and Spurs lying in eighth place in the league after five wins and five defeats from their first 10 games in the Premier League.
Nuno was appointed in July after four years in charge of Wolves but had not been Spurs’ first choice candidate to become manager.
It is understood that Spurs had held talks with Conte, Paulo Fonseca, Gennaro Gattuso and former boss Mauricio Pochettino before they appointed Nuno in the summer.
Now they hope Conte will become the club’s new manager at last as they reportedly reopened talks with the Italian on Monday.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reports that Conte is expected in London to complete talks with the club, with discussions in their final stages and the former Juventus coach ready to accept Spurs’ proposal.
