Wizkid Loses Best World Music Album Category To Angélique Kidjo & Best Global Music Performance To Arooj
The 64th edition of the Grammy Awards in 2022 had some surprises in major categories, which is why we compiled a list of the winners across all categories of the prestigious award.
Most of the awards were presented at the premiere show of the event which kicked off at 8:30 pm West Africa Time (WAT).
The Nigerian afrobeats superstar, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has lost at the 64th Grammy Award in Best World Music Album Category & Best Global Music Performance.
Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos’ album lost Best World Music Album Category to Angélique Kidjo’s “Mother Nature”. Nigeria’s Femi Kuti, and Made Kuti’s “Legacy” were also nominated in that category.
The afrobeats poster boy also lost the Best Global Music Performance to Aftab’s rendition of Mohabbat which makes the Pakistani composer and singer to bagged her first-ever Grammy Award ahead of Femi Kuti, Wizkid, Tems, Angélique Kidjo, Burna Boy, and Yo-Yo Ma at the 64th Edition of the Grammy Award ceremony.
In her acceptance speech, Aftab stated:
“I think I’m gonna faint. Wow thank you so much. I feel like this category in and of itself has been so insane,” “Burna Boy, Wizkid, Femi Kuti, Angélique Kidjo—should this be called Best World Music Performance? I feel like it should be called ‘yacht party category.’ But, anyway, thank you so much to everyone who helped me make this record, all my incredible collaborators, for following me and making this music I made about everything that broke me and put me back together. Thank you for listening to it and making it yours.”
